What does “image GPT” mean?

The phrase covers several related things, and it helps to know which one you need:

  • GPT Image: OpenAI's image models, GPT Image 2 (April 2026) and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst and Flare (September 2026).
  • Image creation in ChatGPT, which OpenAI builds on its GPT Image models.
  • Image GPT (iGPT): a 2020 OpenAI research model that applied a GPT-2-style transformer to pixels and could complete half-finished pictures. It was research, not a tool you can use today.
  • Custom GPTs in ChatGPT that specialise in images, built on the same image features.

From Image GPT to GPT Image

OpenAI's 2020 Image GPT showed that the same kind of model that predicts the next word could predict the next pixel. Today's GPT Image models go much further: they read long instructions, follow reference photos, render legible text and output images up to 3840 pixels on the long side.

Which GPT makes images?

OpenAI's GPT Image models make and edit images. ChatGPT uses them for its image features, and GetGPTImage lets you use GPT Image 2 and 2.5 directly in a browser.

Can I use an image GPT without ChatGPT?
